Articles and documents
» Latest work, articles and images
Our purpose with regard to the articles which will be published here, is to open new lines of research and debate around a mysterious figure such as this, and who, as is everyday more obvious, may have been the subject of some kind of historical forgery.
Not until the middle of the XXth century did the scholars agree to make the writer Miguel de Cervantes a native of the town of Alcalá de Henares. This assertion, nevertheless, is plainly in contrast with the fact that the author himself variously said that he came from Valladolid, Madrid or Córdoba. The biography ascribed to him according to extant documentation doesn’t in the least agree with his personality. So, while the Cervantes of the documents was the son of peasants, farmers, maybe of a poor village surgeon, with no education and whose children were illiterate, the Cervantes we have come to know from the information given by himself in his writings is a highly educated man, with vast and deep knowledge in many fields, such as, for instance, classical authors, navigation, contemporary philosophers, legal and commercial terminology, history, the worlds both of literature and the military, and with a very determined political mind. He is a royal tax collector and can count on the support of highly placed courtiers. What has happened, then, with his biography? Can it be that it has been tampered with by some bureaucratic censor? Everything leads us to think this has been the case. With what purpose? This is what i intend to uncover at the conference.
